Heroes

Since the movie A Mighty Heart has been released about Daniel (and Marianne) Pearl, it got me thinking about people I admire. I did not know Daniel Pearl personally, but I know people who did. Anyone who implicitly or explicitly builds bridges and reduces fear and hatred between people of different races, nationalities, religions, etc. is a hero to me. His story deserves to be retold around the world.

Two other heroes whom I did not know but to whom I had a connection of one kind and whose stories inspire me:
Fern Holland
Amy Biehl

We should not forget them either. I am in awe of each of them. I almost tear up each time I read their stories and realize the bright light that was put out way, way too soon.

Dove Evolution ad

Yes, I know that I am way, way behind the times. Been that way since birth. Don't think I will ever catch up. But I just viewed the Dove Evolution ad that apparently has been a viral marketing storm since last fall (over 3.8 million hits on youtube). It shows in a little over a minute the manipulation that occurs to turn an attractive female into a marketing campaign. The video just won the top award at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. It was created for the Dove Self-Esteem campaign.

It should be required viewing for every tween and teen girl followed by a discussion with her parents about the girls whose pictures she sees in magazines, on billboards and on tv. Great effort by Ogilvy & Mather in Toronto.

Random Mid-week Amusements

I have come across some reading recently that I found enjoyable and thought might be entertaining to certain segments of our population.

For dog lovers - My Dog Days

For academics, consultants, Dilbert fans and anyone who has observed the management of a bureauracy (in the case of this paper, health services) -
A surrealistic mega-analysis of redisorganization theories (much funnier than it sounds)

For music fans, this is from a judge in Montana who quoted Beatles titles in writing his sentencing memorandum - The perp is lucky that the judge was not a heavy metal fan

My brother who is an attorney assures me that the document is genuine
